Tom Petty has been awarded songwriting royalties for the Sam Smith tune “Stay With Me” as the song sounds similar to the Petty song “I Won’t Back Down.” While the two musicians settled back in October, the details were released to the public only in the last several days. October’s settlement include a 12.5% writing credit to both Petty and Smith and singer and composer Jeff Lynne. A rep for Sam has reported that he and Petty are listed as co-writers for “Stay With Me” on ASCAP’s site.
